I don't really need them anymore but just like the idea of keeping them too (per my belts and suspenders approach) ... they have not hurt me in any way that I know of.

For what it is worth, storage is cheap today ... so I simply copy them off into a subdir and delete them before I start working.

The .backup files were essential before 7.2 added undo, but since then they have seemed to me to cause more trouble than they avoid. I can't recall having had a problem where they would have been useful. It seems like a legacy feature.
