Update All for Paragraph Tags in TOC

Okay, so here's what I did:

1. Place copy of old template TOC file somewhere outside the folder (just in case)

2. Drop new template TOC file into directory with other files and rename it to the previous file name used for the TOC in that book

3. Confirm that chapter names and headings in chapter files align with TOC headings in new template.

4. Make sure there is no TOC file in the open Framemaker book (if so, delete it)

5. You should now see an "Add" feature in the menu bar.

6. Click on "Add" and select Table of Contents.

7. In the dialog box, move over the items you want to appear in the TOC. Be sure to include the Index Title TOC. Click on "Add."

8. Another dialog box will appear to update the entire book. Click "Update."

The disappointing result was I got a blank page, and all the other book files appeared to be corrupted as well. :( I closed the book without saving the files. Ugggh, what did I do wrong??

[Offlist]

You'll want to manipulate the tags listed on the reference page that defines which tags are "gathered together" to be the TOC (each of them will end in TOC). Using the old TOC file will require doing some a bunch of clean-up work (not very efficient), so...

The easiest thing is to just drop you new template TOC file in the directory with the other files and then rename it to the name used for the TOC in that book. Then from within the book make sure you set up the TOC to grab the correct headings (your new heading names). Everything else should just fall right into place then -- easy peesy. That's what templates are for.

In fact, your new template should have a book file associated with it (with all the generated files set up properly). You can just replace your old book file with the new one and then add the necessary chapter files around/between (in, with and under) the generated file like the TOC, and (Voila!) when you generate the book you'll get your new TOC. (This assumes your template designer is designing an entire template for books and not just a new chapter file, which is an incomplete job.)

Hope this is helpful. I know I'm behind the curve and responding after a lot of other responses.

Craig

Subject: Update All for Paragraph Tags in TOC

Good morning my esteemed Frame friends,

I just successfully imported formatting from our new template TOC to the current document TOC (shown below). In this particular file, the paragraph tags for content headings (HeadVC1, HeadVC2, etc.) are labeled differently from the tags for content headings in the template TOC (HeadTOC1, HeadTOC2, etc). It will let me select one heading or a group of headings to update, but it won't let me do an Update All. It takes FOREVER to update every heading, one by one, to the correct tag in the template. Is there a way I can apply the tags from the new template to all the tags in the current doc at once?

Thanks!
Linda
