How do I get wildcards to work in Replace?

It seems to me that in Replace, the wildcards (that work in Find), are
no longer considered wildcards but regular text. Example:
When I look for a string that has straight quotes around it, I search
for "*". This works. Now I want to replace it by smart quotes \`*\' I
get the asterisk surrounded by smart quotes.

Any way to get around this?
