Don't know the cause, but if it's file corruption, you could try the 
"heroic open command" -- close all open docs, then use esc-o-H and
try to open the file.  If you get anything, immediately save it as
MIF and quit FrameMaker.  Then restart Frame, open the MIF file, and
save it in Document (.fm) format.
