What about the time/date of the .lck files? Are they left over from a previous crash? Or are they current? If they are not current, delete them and see if you still get a crash when you attempt a book-level operation. Otherwise, they can cause the same kind of problem as a missing fonts message or an unresolved cross-reference message. The issue is that *any* dialog that you get when opening an individual file causes a problem when you attempt a book-level operation because it blocks FrameMaker from successfully performing a "silent open" of the file to scan or modify it. Remember that most operations you perform at the book level actually make changes that are written into all the chapter files, whether it's just updated numbering values or different conditional text settings.
