I'm not completely sure I understand your question, but maybe this will
help.

At my last job, we used Author-it to edit and manage our documentation
process. The initial conversion of Word and FrameMaker documents into the
Author-it text format was time consuming, but necessary. After that we
worked in the Author-it text editor usually without issue. 

Because our documents were all parts of a larger volume, we would run batch
updates every night so that the" books" were always updated. That way we had
fewer surprises at release time.

I'm not sure if FrameMaker has a similar product.
