The background knowledge will I hope be useful, but Rick's advice is sound: it doesn't sound from your application as if you need to run any conversions. However, without having your entire app and code in front of me (I'm not volunteering, as my structure skills are now a bit rusty ;-), I can't say what your problem might be.
